If you’re newly engaged and wondering, “Okay…when am I supposed to book my bridal hairstylist?....very valid question and you’re not alone.

The answer really depends on your wedding date, location, and how many people will be getting their hair done.

Getting married on a weekday or having an intimate wedding?

If you’re eloping or having a smaller wedding in Santa Barbara on a weekday, you may be able to get away with booking your bridal hairstylist around 6 months in advance. That said, if you already know who you want to work with, I wouldn’t necessarily wait! Your favorite stylist may have limited availability, especially during popular wedding months.

Getting married on a weekend during peak season?

I highly recommend planning a little further in advance and doing your research on when peak season is at your wedding location.

For weddings in Santa Barbara County during peak season (typically July through October) I recommend booking your bridal hairstylist about 9–12 months in advance, especially if your wedding falls on a Saturday or you have a larger bridal party.

And if you have your heart set on a specific stylist? The earlier, the better. Popular dates can book up well before the 12 month mark.

Why book your hairstylist so early?

Booking your hairstylist early isn’t just about securing your wedding date. It also gives you plenty of time to actually prepare for your wedding hair.

Once you’re officially booked, you’ll have time to:

  • Schedule your bridal hair preview/trial

  • Grow your hair to your ideal length

  • Work on the health and condition of your hair

  • Order or prepare extensions if your desired style calls for them

  • Make any necessary hair color change in advance

  • Fine-tune your wedding day timeline

  • Make adjustments to your hairstyle without feeling rushed

And trust me, you don’t want to be experimenting with a completely new haircut, color, or hair routine two weeks before your wedding.

My rule of thumb?

If you’re planning a Saturday wedding during peak season in Santa Barbara, I’d aim to book your bridal hairstylist around a year in advance.

If you’re having a weekday wedding, an intimate celebration, or an elopement, you may have a little more flexibility and could potentially book closer to your date.

But if you’ve found the stylist whose work you love, don’t wait just because your wedding is still a year away. Your wedding hair is one of those details that feels far away…until suddenly it’s three months before your wedding and you’re thinking...“Wait, am I supposed to have booked this already?”

Consider this your sign to start looking early. ✨
